Children from Pembroke, Thornwell, Shirenewton and Llandogo primary schools attended the event also supported by the successful year 10/11 rugby team of Chepstow Comprehensive.
The day was an ideal opportunity for many youngsters to have their first taste of rugby with hands-on coaching from the Dragons players.

Gail Roberts of Llandogo Primary was grateful to the Dragons players involved, stating: “Their interaction has definitely enhanced the pupils experience, and will undoubtedly have an effect on some youngsters taking part in the sport more frequently. We look forward in visiting Rodney Parade in the future to support the boys.”

Newport Gwent Dragons James Harris added: “It’s great to get out into the community especially when the response from each of the schools is so positive. The Dragons players seemed to be having as much fun as the children and whether the children pursue rugby or any other sport I’m pleased that the Dragons were able to support them this afternoon.”

The scheme is supported by the comprehensive school pupils, which saw the year 11 rugby side assist in the session before their match with St.Josephs school this evening. These pupils will continue their development next year when they begin their coach education training. This will see them visit the local feeder primary schools and assist their rugby development by delivering TAG rugby sessions.

The day was also a recruitment day for Chepstow RFC mini and juniors, with club representative Chris Wheeler present.

He commented, “This is definitely a worthwhile experience for us as a rugby club, as we’ve given out over 100 flyers to the children, so hopefully, we’ll see a few of them attend our mini and junior evenings, and they’ll continue to participate out of the school environment,” he said.
