Gareth Baber’s side suffered a disappointing defeat to France on Day One of the San Diego competition which took away any chance of reaching the last eight of the Cup. But they performed well on Day Two, recording wins over Australia (19-12), Canada (22-14) and hosts the USA (21-19) to come away with silverware.

IRB Audio: Sevens captain Johnathan Edwards on Wales’s Bowl victory

Squad captain Johnathan Edwards, who was forced to sit out the final through injury said yesterday, “We were delighted with our performances on Day Two. It’s been a tough day starting with Australia this morning in the Bowl quarter final and coming up against the USA in front of their home crowd in the final was also a challenge.

“The Americans are always physical and when Tal Selley dropped the ball over the line we thought we’d missed our chance but Tal is a key figure in our development, a talisman for the team and his quality put us back on track.

“We are pleased with our tournament despite not qualifying for the Cup quarter-finals.”

Wales Sevens are next in action at the Hong Kong and Adelaide Sevens, starting with Hong Kong in late March.
