Two years previously both teams had met in a semi final match and Tylorstown went on to win the Welsh Cup. However, this time a mixture of committed defence and speed in the backs ensured a hard-won 25-5 victory for the home team.
For large periods of the first quarter the game was played in the Dolgellau half, yet the home team not only sustained the pressure, but turned the ball over allowing their swift backs to attack Tylorstown’s open spaces. It was the extra speed that allowed fullback Elen Evans to open the scoring when she retrieved a kick and sliced through the opposition’s defence.
Dolgellau’s second try was a good team effort, set up by quick ball and the elusive Lowri Evans winged in under the posts.
Tylorstown came back in the second half with a well-deserved try from running a penalty thanks to their forward effort. However, the Dolgellau forwards came into their own, led by Louise Akers. They secured a clean line-out ball enabling the Dolgellau backs to score; Elen Evans again touching down after a fine movement.
Another try each for Lowri Evans and Louise Akers, and a penaly led Dolgellau to a confortable win over their rivals.
It was possibly the home team’s finest result and they are now looking forward to their hard-earned semi final game.
