Wing wizard Williams touched down to secure the Triple Crown in Dublin and equal Thomas on 40 Test tries and Jones insists he won’t be surprised if his fellow wing achieves the feat in the Grand Slam decider against France next Saturday.
Jones said: “Shane deserves to equal the record because he’s a fantastic professional and I’ve got no doubts he will go on to break it.
“It’s been coming for a while and it was a sharp finish. I did say to him last week that I have to stop being at the bottom of rucks while he’s scoring all the tries. And [on Saturday] I was in the ruck again and he touched down again!
“He’s certainly one of the top wingers in world rugby and will always pose questions of any team. He’s proved to be a top class winger, his strike-rate is tremendous and we hope it continues.”
Wales had been wound up by Rory Best’s comments on the eve of the clash after he claimed Warren Gatland’s men had not been tested in this season’s RBS Six Nations. And Jones reckoned Wales rammed the Irish hooker’s words back down his throat in perfect fashion.
Jones said: “I’m glad to say we answered Rory Best in the right manner with our performance and a victory. He asked us the question and we came up with the right answer.
“We’d heard his comments that Ireland would take apart our line-out and that we hadn’t been tested yet. We were steely in our mentality to prove them wrong if they did have any doubts and we produced a brilliant performance.
“It was a great feeling at the final whistle, we’ve achieved a small milestone but we know we’ve got a massive game left. It would be a great waste if we don’t finish it off next week. We haven’t done the job yet.”
