Wales flanker Williams, 32, was coaxed out of retirement by dragons boss Warren Gatland prior to the RBS Six Nations and it worked a treat as the man nicknamed Nugget produced a succession of inspired performances in the number seven jersey.

The British Lion was named by many pundits in the team of the tournament and rounded off a triumphant campaign with the Grand Slam clinching try against France at the Millennium Stadium. And former All Black No.8 Rush said: “Martyn was outstanding and over the last five games that’s the best I’ve seen him play.

“The boys have been calling him ‘SOG’ since – Son of Gatland! I didn’t see the Grand Slam three years ago but Martyn is playing as consistently as ever.

“Wales were by far the best team in the Six Nations and it was fabulous to watch. The players will come back high on confidence and we hope that will help the Blues.”

Veteran Williams has been rewarded with a week’s rest by Blues Coach Dai Young along with Wales teammates Gethin Jenkins and Tom Shanklin. The trio will miss the region’s Magners League Welsh derby with Llanelli Scarlets on Friday night but will report for training next Monday.
