Baber eager to face the world’s best

Wales Sevens Coach Gareth Baber is relishing the prospect of taking on the best of the world in Hong Kong.

Baber knows that the world’s greatest Sevens tournament is played out in Hong Kong and he is ready to put his players up against the best to break into the game’s elite group.

Baber said: “We’ve got Fiji, Zimbabwe and Korea to deal with in our pool stage and we know how difficult that’s going to be.

“We beat Fiji at Twickenham last year and that was a great moment for us, but we know we can’t rely on that. This competition also teaches you never to underestimate any opponent so have to give Zimbabwe and Korea the utmost of respect.”

Wales, who kick-off their Hong Kong campaign against Zimbabwe tomorrow (Friday 28th), are outside of the top ten in the IRB World Series and must get the better of perennial world leaders Fiji to progress in the Cup competition over the weekend.

“We know we have the quality within our squad to challenge the best in the world these days. We just need to keep getting the practice,” said Baber. “Every tournament we play gives us a chance to improve. We are getting better all the time.”
