Round Up: National Leagues One

Pontypool produced a sizzling display of running rugby to down last year’s champions Beddau and finally take the Division One East title.

Pooler ran in seven tries to record an emphatic 53-9 victory with Dan Robinson and Nathan Preece each grabbing a brace. There were further scores for stalwart Cae Treharne and Geraint Driscoll while a penalty try accounted for the final touchdown.

Being as none of the leading clubs in One West meet the ground criteria for the Premiership, it seems certain that the East champions will not need to contest a play-off meaning their promotion would be guaranteed.

Caerphilly, who had sat at the top of the Division for large parts of the season, would have hoped for a favour from Beddau in order to take the title down to the wire, but that result proved immaterial in the end as the Cheesemen fell to a 24-19 defeat at the hands of Llanharan; scoring tries through Adrian Ford and Justin Jones while Gethin Worgan kicked three penalties and a conversion.

Christian Wills raced over for two tries as Fleur de Lys snatched a breath taking 27-26 win from Bargoed while Brett Green landed four penalties a conversion and the match winning dropped goal moments from time.

In the West, Tonmawr will have to get a result at Waunarlwydd next week if they are to be crowned champions after Carmarthen Quins did all they could do with a bonus point, 37-30 triumph over Narberth. Winger Josh Freeman scored two tries in the match with Alex Wilkins, Chris Francis and Chris Jones also going over.

Ton were made to fight hard at Whitland for a tight 2-14 win. The relegation battle is also heading to the last game of the season with all three bottom clubs winning. The key match will be next week’s meeting between Bridgend Athletic and Corus at Waterton Cross.
