Scarlets end season in sixth spot

Dafydd James’s late try was not enough to save Llanelli Scarlets going down 29-12 to Edinburgh in the last game of the season to finish in sixth place in the Magners League table.

Wales wing James crossed in the second minute of injury time, but by then the damage had been done by four Scottish tries at Stradey Park.

The result saw the Scarlets finish sixth in the Magners League, the second best placed Welsh region, and added to the region’s woes following the departure of Director of Rugby Phil Davies last week. It was also an unhappy farewell for Sale-bound Dwayne Peel and retiring Garan Evans who were introduced to the crowd before kick-off.

Mathew Watkins led out the Scarlets for his 150th appearance and they started brightly, taking an early lead through hooker Mahonri Schwalger. But Edinburgh claimed a 12-7 lead at the break when lock Ben Gissing galloped over from 25 metres before wing Andrew Turnbull scorched in.

Edinburgh wrapped up the bonus point with two tries in the space of five minutes, swiftly after the break as the Scarlets ran out of steam.

Matt Mustchin sent skipper Hogg under the posts and Nick De Luca’s angled burst and over-head pass saw scrum half Blair dive in for the fourth.

Nathan Thomas was denied late on but James powered over in injury time as the Scarlets had the last word. But the defeat summed up a disappointing campaign for the Stradey Park region.
