The 33-year-old has committed himself to the Stradey Park outfit by signing a two-year deal that will come as a huge lift for the Scarlet faithful ahead of their move to Pemberton next season.
The powerful ball carrier agreed the move from French club Castres after visiting Llanelli to meet with regional bosses and view the new £23 million stadium, under construction in the town.
Speaking after his brief visit, Meeuws said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and quickly realised what a wonderful area Llanelli is and I am sure my family and I will enjoy our time here.”
Meeuws added: “I was impressed by the ambitions of the Scarlets when we met. They have the best Welsh record in Europe. Having seen the new stadium and all its on site training facilities, I have no doubt that I have made the right decision in joining the Scarlets.”
The Scarlets have been eager to boost their strength in the front row following a disappointing season that ended with them missing out on fellow All Black Greg Somerville. Now it is hoped that Meeuws could be the answer.
Meeuws won 42 caps for New Zealand before moving to France in August 2004. His club career has included Super 12 rugby for both the Highlanders and Blues before spending the last four years with Castres Olympique.
The capture of Meeuws is the first signing by newly appointed Scarlets Coach Nigel Davies who said, “Kees’s record and pedigree as an All Black, coupled with his desire for further success, makes him a great signing for the Scarlets. He is a proven leader whose experience will be vital for next season.”
Scarlets Chief Executive Stuart Gallacher monitored Meeuws’s progress in the French Championship, and said: “His physical condition is terrific and he proved to us he still has the motivation to play top level European rugby.”
