The former Swansea, Bridgend and Celtic Warrior has signed a two-year deal with the Scarlets, and returns to Wales after a four-year spell with Sale Sharks.

With Peel making the reverse move up to Manchester, the 27-times-capped Fijian international is keen to make his mark under the guidence of former Wales coach Nigel Davies.

“It has been a good four years away and I learnt a lot in Manchester with Phillipe Saint Andre and Kingsley Jones, and hopefully I can bring that experience to the Scarlets,” he told the Western Mail

With the season kick-off less than three weeks away, Martens is enjoying the build up to the new term and insists he will be fighting for his place in the starting lineup against Ultser.

Martens will be pitted against Martin Roberts, Gavin Cattle and young talent Lee Williams for the Scarlets’ number nine jersey.

“There are three other scrum-halves here and there is no way I am expecting to just turn up and play, “he said.  “I am expecting to fight for my place and I don’t want it any other way, we are all playing for a starting spot in the side,”
