The side made history last weekend when they beat England Women for the first time, and the Welsh Rugby Union have now confirmed Wales Women will wear the gold and black strip for the Six Nations clash against France at Montauban on the eve of St David’s Day, next Saturday.
The gold and black strip represents the flag of St David which depicts a gold cross on a black field and is often flown on St David’s Day alongside or as a replacement to the traditional and widely known red dragon flag of Wales. The kit makes the link between the patron saint of Wales and the Welsh rugby kit.
The kit was first worn by Warren Gatland’s Wales team for the autumn Test against Canada, and now it’s Wales Women’s turn to don the innovative strip, designed by the WRU’s Official Technical Partner, Under Armour, in close consultation with the Welsh Rugby Union.
Wales Women captain Mellissa Berry said, “It is a huge privilege and honour to put on the Wales jersey and represent your country, whatever the game. Rugby plays such an important part in our country’s heritage and it’s great that on St David’s Day weekend, we can represent our country in a kit that links us so closely with its history.”
After helping Wales Women gain that historic 16-15 victory over England last weekend, Wales’ Non Evans is looking for her side to break even more records.
Evans’ dramatic last-minute penalty gave Wales their first success over their arch rivals in 22 years of competition.
Next up is the challenge of recording another first – beating France on French soil having returned empty-handed from their previous five visits.
But 75-cap full-back Evans insists confidence is high within the Wales camp having won their last three of the last four meetings with les Bleues and hot on the heals of their shock win over England.
“Beating France on French soil is something we have never done but after winning three of our last four meetings, we’ll be going out there feeling confident,” said Evans.
“We beat them in the European championship in Holland last year, as well as beating them in Taffs Well and Pontypridd. But to win in France next week is going to be difficult. Having said that, if we do manage to get a result next weekend, there’s nothing stopping us going for the title.”
Wales lead the Six Nations following wins over England and Scotland ahead of their clash in Montauban on Saturday 28 February (3pm local time) and will earn automatic World Cup qualification if they finish above Ireland, Scotland and Italy.
Wales Women head coach Jason Lewis will announce his starting 22 to face France at 12.15pm on Monday 23 February at the Vale Resort, Hensol.
