Cardiff Blues are confident their trio of injured Wales stars – back row forwards Martyn Williams and Andy Powell along with threequarter Gareth Thomas – will all be fit for their crunch Heineken Cup quarter-final clash with Toulouse at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.

“We don’t see any problems with Martyn, Andy or Gareth and, although we have a final check-up before announcing the 22, we shouldn’t be far from a full strength squad,” said Head Coach Dai Young at a special Press conference today.

“But if anyone is not 100 per cent then they wont be involved because this match is like an international.

“These are exciting times for us and we have worked hard over the last five years to get where we are today. There is a lot of anticipation and excitement in the squad and, although it is a massive challenge ahead, it is one we don’t fear and one are looking forward to meeting.”

Triple champions Toulouse knocked the Blues out 41-17 at the same stage of last season’s tournament but Young is confident his team is a changed one – and that they will be the ones with home advantage this time.

“I believe we are a far better team now, that we have matured as a squad, have a harder edge and are more used to playing big games on the big stage,” said the former Wales captain.

“Last season when we reached the Heineken Cup quarter-finals it was a big achievement but we must not settle for that this time, we must have the self belief and determination to go further.

“It is a big statement, getting to the quarter-finals in successive seasons but Toulouse represent another step up the ladder.

“They are real European giants with very few weaknesses and everyone knows they are a formidable side. However, we must not give them the sort of start we gave them last year because once they get their noses in front the gain in confidence.”

The Blues report that they have sold 26,000 tickets so far – they are expecting 1,500 Toulouse fans – and are banking on a large Millennium Stadium walk-up on the day.
