The fly-half had been linked with a summer switch to Leicester Tigers. But Jones has rubbished talks of a big-money move after admitting he has opened talks on extending his contract with the Welsh region.

Jones, 32, said: “I’m trying to sort out my future with the Scarlets. Hopefully I can get to an agreement soon.

“I’m enjoying my rugby here, I want things to be done as soon as possible and I want to finish my career here.”

Jones, who has already targeted the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand as his international swansong, is likely to carry on playing for a season or more at his beloved Scarlets.

The fly-half, who has spent all of his career at the Scarlets, apart from a two-year-stint with French side Clermont Auvergne, has become an integral part of Warren Gatland’s Wales plans.

Scarlets head coach Nigel Davies confirmed the region’s desire to keep their talisman in west Wales.

Davies said: “We are very positive about Steve and the influence that he has on this squad, particularly at this moment in time with the amount of youngsters we have. We are very keen that he stays here.

“I think he has stated himself that he is enjoying his time here and he is seeing a lot of positives with the youngsters coming through.

“He wants to be part of the Scarlets region moving forward. It is where we are in terms of the negotiations moving forward to extend his contract.”
