Jevon Groves’ players had earlier beaten hosts India 57-7 in the opening game of the day but the game proved costly with injuries to wings Kristian Philliips, Alex Cuthbert and Ifan Evans. They were convincing against Tonga in their second game, winning 38-7 with a brace of tries for Sevens veteran Richie Pugh and further scores from Wales wing Tom Prydie, Cardiff duo Gareth Davies and Rhys Shellard and Scarlets youngster Lee Rees.
Wales started well against South Africa with a try for Pugh but Paul Treu’s side proved stronger in the contact area and in the loose and ran over for three converted tries before half-time.
Paul John’s side will be particularly disappointed with the way South Africa dominated at the restart and then South Africa used their skill and speed well to turn the pressure into points.
There were no further scores in the second half and Wales must now prepare to face three times Commonwealth Games winners New Zealand in the Cup quarter-final tomorrow morning.
