The legendary winger was a Lion as a player in 1968 and 1971 before taking on the role of team manager on last year’s tour to South Africa.

That position has now been handed to former Scotland full back Andy Irvine for the trip Down Under, while the Lions have also announced that they will play an historic warm-up fixture in Hong Kong.

Britain and Ireland’s elite will face the Barbarians prior to traveling to Australia as they look to bounce back from three successive series defeats.

“It is a huge honour for me to continue my long association with The Lions as chairman for the 2013 Tour to Australia,” said Davies.

“The Lions remains one of the greatest adventures in modern rugby and I look forward to once again sharing in the unique spirit and prestige of The Lions.”

Davies’ excitement was shared by current Wales and Lions star Jamie Roberts.

The injured centre was named Player of the Series on the 2009 adventure, winning a place in the Test XV alongside Brian O’Driscoll and making him a name for himself as one of the leading names in world rugby.

Roberts has been forced to sit out next month’s Invesco Autumn Series with a wrist injury but he hopes to win a place on a second Lions tour in three years’ time.

“There is no greater incentive for a player from the Home Unions than to earn selection for the British & Irish Lions and today’s event makes the 2013 Tour feel that little bit closer,” said Roberts at a Lions launch in London.

“It will be an amazing tour and I very much hope to be involved as a player if selected.”
