Howley: Beware of Italian backlash

Wales assistant coaches Rob Howley and Robin McBryde have warned the Welsh players they need total discipline when they face an Italian backlash in Rome tomorrow.

They say the Italians will be out to get back on track after their heavy RBS 6 Nations defeat against England at Twickenham last weekend.

The Welsh team trained in bright sunshine in Rome this afternoon but the coaches warned the team they will have to be focused on a disciplined game plan when they take on the italians.

Howley said: “We must take what we did well against Scotland and move on as it has got to be about discipline in all areas. The players have trained well and we have got confidence which we will need in abundance against the Italians.

“With the good weather conditions we could get caught up in a sevens type game but we have got to play our rugby in the right areas of the field.

“Italy played very well against Ireland and it is very frustrating when you’ve done enough to win a game and then to concede a drop goal in the last minute. It is a very fine margin between winning and losing.

“They have got one player in Sergio Parissio who is admired by everyone in world rugby and everything that is good about Italian rugby, Sergio seems to be involved in.

McBryde added, “The ‘Italians are very strong at set piece and we’ve got to be at our best there and make them work for 80 minutes.

“They are a good team, thay have proved that in the first match of the Six Nations when they pushed Ireland all the way. They didn’t have a good day at Twickenham so they will be looking to put things right at their first opportunity.

“They will up their game and come out firing at us so we are going to have to be at our best. There are things we could have done better against Scotalnd so we will focus on detail and make sure we create chances.

“We can end up putting ourselves under great pressure if we take Italy lightly so we have got to come here in a businesslike manner and play rugby.”
