The former Mold RFC player will be taking part in WRU-run rugby sessions,  chatting to Eisteddfod goers and signing autographs on Saturday afternoon on the sports section of the Maes (Maes Chwarae 2 – 4pm). WRU development officers will also be running rugby sessions on Monday afternoon (2 – 4pm). Rugby fans of all ages are encouraged to turn up and have a chat with Rob or have a go at the rugby skills.

WRU Regional Development Manager for North Wales Austin Thomas said, “It’s great to have Rob (McCusker) returning to this area to attend the Eisteddfod here in Wrexham, especially for the children of the area who can aspire to achieve what Rob’s achieved in becoming a professional rugby player. Rob came out of the community game, playing for Mold in north Wales and progressed further when he went to the Scarlets.”

Wales international referee Nigel Owens will also be in attendance at the National Eisteddfod, after being recognised by the Gorsedd y Beirdd for his contribution to the Welsh language and culture.

He said, “It was a surprise to be honoured in this way, but something I’m very proud of. I sought a lot of advice when choosing a bardic name and eventually came up with Dyfarnwr y Mynydd which means Referee from the Mountain as I’m from Mynydd Cerrig and I feel it’s important not to forget where I’ve come from.”

Owens will take charge of Ireland v England on August 27 before heading to New Zealand as part of a streamlined 10-man referee panel.

He said, “It’s a huge honour to represent your country at any level and although I went to the Rugby World Cup in France four years ago, I am thrilled to be going to New Zealand and I’m determined to produce good performances to fly the flag for Wales.”
