Wales depart for RWC 2011

The Welsh Rugby Union’s Facebook Friends have inspired the national team, after fans sent in hundreds of good luck messages ahead of their Rugby World Cup campaign.

One lucky fan, Rebecca Timothy of Catterick, Yokrshire (but originally from Merthyr) was the lucky fan who scooped the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet the Wales team and deliver the messages of support on behalf of all Welsh fans.

“I’ve always been a massive Welsh rugby fan, since as far back as I can remember. My Dad and Grandad are from Merthyr and have brought me up to support Wales.

“My father works in the army so as a family we have lived all over, including England and Germany but wherever I have been I’ve always supported Wales whenever and whoever they play. I try to get to as many matches as I can.  I watched them beat England which was amazing.

“I’ll definitely be following them in the World Cup, I’ll be setting my alarm and getting up any hour to watch them play.”

Rebecca presented the supportive messages to Wales captain for the weekend Martyn Williams prior to the Argentina game, at the team’s Captain’s run.  The messages have been immortalised in print in a special book that will travel with the team to the southern hemisphere for the world’s greatest rugby tournament.

WRU Head of Sales and Marketing Craig Maxwell said, “Many WRU Supporters Club members will be used to sending inspirational messages to be posted in the Wales’ changing room at Millennium Stadium and we’ve seen how these notes of support have boosted the team before rugby internationals.

“We now have many supporters through Facebook that have shown they are passionate about our Welsh Team and as Wales prepare to travel to New Zealand, they have given them the biggest and best send off.”

The exclusive opportunity for fans on www.facebook.com/welshrugbyunion was launched with the hope of inspiring Warren Gatland’s World Cup squad ahead of their campaign in New Zealand next month.

The team left for Heathrow this afternoon from their Hensol base and will arrive in New Zealand where they begin their campaign against South Africa.
