The SUKSG is an annual multi sport event for the UK’s elite young athletes of school age. This is the first year the tournament is including rugby sevens but it is hoped some of the young Welsh talent on display can show enough prowess to force their way into regional and national squads.
The opening ceremony was held last night with the Welsh squad training today before beginning their campaign tomorrow.
As well as playing there are various workshops put on for the players including: 100% ME drug awareness, dealing with setbacks, dealing with nerves, positive self talk and gaining the psychological edge.
All of these will be aided by athlete mentors, with former Wales prop Chris Horsmann one specialist providing information for the players..
Wales will provide two squads of Under 18 players. The players have been identified by Performance staff or been selected by U18 Regional coaches from last season.
Having attended a trials day where they were fitness tested and put through their rugby skills, the two squads were selected. They will be managed by Sophie Bennett and Sara Davies and coached by national coaches Rhys Edwards and Liza Burgess.
The will be assisted by Blues U18s Head Coach, Owen Smith.
The squad is: Racheal Rees (Ospreys), Rebecca de Filippo (Ospreys), Jo Jones (Blues), Cerys Ballet (Blues), Ffion Jones (Scarlets), Lisa Neumann (Scarlets), Catrin Rees (Scarlets), Amberley Ruck (Blues), Chloe Mastaglio (Ospreys), Megan Daley (Dragons) Stephanie Harris (Scarlets), Gwen Harries (RGC 1404), Alaw Hughes (RGC 1404), Brogan Jones (Blues), Laura Orgill (Blues), Heather Rees (Scarlets), Thea Lawson (Blues), Gaby French (Blues).
