The home side, playing with the wind in the first half, opened the scoring with a penalty try early on, and the conversion and a penalty from outside half Danny Clark gave his team a 10-3 interval lead. A penalty from Clark’s opposite number Jordan Lloyd was all Treorchy could muster in response.
But the visitors came right back into the match after the break thanks to a brace of tries from hooker Shaun Green. The front-row forward was the grateful recipient of two quickly taken Zebras penalties in succession on their opponents’ 22m line, both of which caught Rumney napping.
The home side snatched a draw with a late score from prolific home winger Gareth Stoppani, and another successful conversion from Clark. The draw, the first in the division this season, leaves both sides in lower mid table.
Ebbw Vale regained the lead in the division as they won their first league game for seven weeks by dispatching previous table-toppers Bargoed at Eugene Cross Park. The visitors crossed for the game’s only try, through a second-half effort from centre James Pizey
But five penalties from the boot of outside half Dorian Jones gave the Steelmen the lead – and a crucial four-point lead at the top of the division.
Saturday’s only other game saw Blackwood slip to a disappointing 15-0 home defeat to Newbridge. Wings Andrew Bevan and Chris Jones scored the tries as the visitors kept alive their hopes of promotion to the Premiership.
