Following a brace of tries from No 8 Stuart Leach, flanker James Parry and skipper Greg Roberts went over to take the side in 22-3 up at the break. Quins fought back with a second half try but failed to keep up the pressure as Kia Burrows broke away for Glynneath to secure the home side’s win.

Pre-season favourites Carmarthen Athletic were well beaten by Llangennch, conceding four tries in a 29-17 defeat. Kenfig Hill also slipped to a 33-22 defeat at Ammanford, despite scoring three tries.

There was also a great win for the North Walian newcomers RGC 1404, who picked up a bonus point at Gilfach Goch in a 42-19 victory. Flanker Tom Parry scored two of his sides five tries and there were 15 points from the boot of Rhodri Carlton-Jones.

Last season’s Division 2 East champions Ystrad Rhondda showed their intent in the new division as they beat Tredegar 65-7. Alex Webber helped himself to four tries and Dai Graton got a hat-trick in a 10-try haul.

In Division 2 West, Maesteg got off to a promising start as they secured a comfortable 22-8 win over Builth Wells at The Old Parish. Having only won one game all last season in the same division this was a heartening result for all Maesteg fans.

After a strong first 40 minutes the home side led 15-3, and despite a second half try for Builth from Wayne Morris, touchdowns from Scott Davies, Grant Epton and Ryan Miles got Maesteg off to winning ways.

Maesteg Quins made it a notable double for the town as they beat Taibach at home, while Aberystwyth crossed for six tries in a 37-10 victory over Haverfordwest.

In Division 5 West, Swansea Uplands breezed past St Clears with a 50-6 victory. Outside half Tom Edmunds started his season with a hat trick for the home team whilst other scorers were Harry Lees, Dai Parton, John Govier and Paul Beck.
