Rampant Swansea cut loose

An impressive Swansea performance saw them put Aberavon to the sword with a bonus point victory at a sun-soaked St Helen’s.

The Whites ran in four tries in their 32-13 win although it was the Wizards who started the game fastest.

Aberavon scrum half David Pritchard peeled off the back of a ruck to score in the corner and although Jamie Davies missed the conversion, the visitors had secured an early lead.

Swansea soon responded though when a grubber kick to the corner by scrum half Aled Lewis set up a dangerous attack from which they earned a penalty. Sam Davies kicked the three points to get his side on the scoreboard.

Both Steffan Jones and Sean Williams came close to scoring the Whites’ first try before Davies took a quick tap penalty and crashed over the line before adding the conversion.

Jamie Davies responded for the visitors with a penalty after the Swansea forwards were penalised at a ruck but the Whites began to put huge pressure on the Aberavon line and were rewarded when No. 8 Steffan Jones squeezed over in the corner for a try. Davies missed the conversion before Swansea winger Jordan Skidmore was sent to the side-lines for 10 minutes for a deliberate one-handed knock down.

Davies extended the Whites’ 15-8 half-time lead four minutes into the second half with a drop goal but with five minutes of normal time remaining, the visitors scored arguably the best try of the match to bring themselves back into contention. Phillips, Chris Davies and Morgan Allen were all involved before the ball was swept out wide to Stefan Andrews who touched down.

But replacement Dan Baker clinched victory for Swansea by stealing lineout ball and then diving over to score an opportunist try. Davies converted and the home side made sure of a bonus point when replacement Jamie Thomas intercepted a pass inside his own half and raced in to score under the posts.
