Stars hit the road to meet fans

George North, Alex Cuthbert, Jonathan Davies and Jamie Roberts will be the first of a host of Wales Grand Slam stars to visit a supermarket near you, from tomorrow.

Wing sensation North will be on hand to meet and greet fans and sign autographs at the Tesco superstore in Cardigan between 5pm and 7pm tomorrow, whilst his Scarlets colleague and centre Jonathan Davies will visit Tesco in Llanelli at the same time.

Blues pair Alex Cuthbert (5 – 7.00pm) and Jamie Roberts (5.30pm – 7pm) will visit the major east Wales outlets at Bridgend and Cardiff, as the Welsh Rugby Union remind fans that they can now buy tickets to watch their international stars in action at their local supermarkets.

The visits are just the first in a campaign which will see Wales’ Grand Slammers go on the road over the period of the next four weeks.

Every Wednesday evening a different player from Warren Gatland’s victorious 2012 RBS 6 Nations squad will be at another store meeting shoppers, with the Grand Slam Trophy itself also making regular appearances.

New dates and venues will be published online at www.wru.co.uk when they occur, but the current list of towns / stores set to welcome the stars of Welsh international rugby over the coming weeks includes: Ammanford, Barry, Bridgend Extra, Cardiff Extra, Cardigan, Carmarthen, Culverhouse Cross, Haverfordwest, Llanelli, Newport Extra, Pontypool, St Mellons, Swansea Extra and Swansea Llansamlet.

Fans should look online or contact their relevant store for further details and also take note that this year participating Tesco stores around Wales are now selling tickets for the Dove Men Challenge Autumn series of internationals against Argentina and Samoa.

The series kicks-off when Wales take on the Pumas at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, 10 November, the mighty Samoans come to town on Friday, 16 November, Wales then face the All Blacks in a now ‘sold-out’ clash on Saturday, 24 November, before the series climax against the Wallabies on Saturday, 1 December.

WRU head of marketing Craig Maxwell said: “We wanted our Grand Slam stars to get out into communities and meet and greet some of the fans who would not ordinarily get to see them in the flesh.

“What better way than for the players to go out to their local supermarkets at peak times when shoppers will be able to grab autographs and even pose for pictures with the players and with the silverware that will also be on the road with them at some of the stores.

“Our research shows that one of the key misconceptions amongst rugby fans is that there aren’t any tickets available for Wales’ internationals.

“It is true that tickets to watch our Grand Slam heroes are in high demand, the fact that the clash with the All Blacks has long been sold out is evidence of that, but there are tickets left for Argentina and Samoa and the initiative with Tesco ensures that tickets for the Argentina and Samoa matches are easy to get hold of at one of the largest supermarket chains in the UK.”
