The annual Clive Evans memorial tournament, now in its fifteenth year, is held in memory of Clive Evans who was a dedicated member of the club over a number of years.
As well as being a well-respected committee man for Maesteg Celtic for many years, Mr Evans was also chairman of Glamorgan County Rugby Club and Bridgend District.
The tournament held in his memory takes place at Garth Park, home of Maesteg Celtic with registration opening at 9.30am. Kick-off in the first round of games will be at 10.00am.
Mini and junior teams from across the local area will take part in a round robin tournament for ages seven to 11 which forms part of the WRU’s Join the Beat campaign.
“It’s very much a rugby focused tournament and we love to see the children having a run around and enjoying the game,” said club chairman Ian Davis. “We would like to encourage parents to come along and see their children in action.
“It’s a lovely venue and we’re trying to foster the game in the valley and we’re very proud to call it the Clive Evans memorial tournament.”
The tournament sees age groups at U7, U8, U9, U10 and U11 all compete with the winners from each age group receiving their awards at the end of the day. There are still places available for teams who would like to compete in the U9 and U11 age groups.
As a part of the Join the Beat campaign, there will also be stalls a BBQ and a number of family activities held throughout the day.
“We are new members to Join the Beat but our tournament is part of the process,” added Davis. “It’s specifically about the rugby but it’s great to hold a tournament every year in Clive’s memory. He worked so hard to see children play the game and his family continue to support the tournament.”
