Keys pay the penalty

Llanelli condemned Cross Keys to their second defeat of the season at Parc y Scarlets in a game where the visitors will have been pretty happy to have gained a losing bonus point.

The visitors were second best in every aspect of the game as the home side constantly took advantage of the needless penalties Greg Woods’ men conceded.

And it was the penalties which made the difference, all of Llanelli’s points coming from the boot of Jonny Lewis in their 12-6 win.

The scrum was a complete mess from start to finish with neither side able to get the better of referee Jon Mason’s overworked whistle.

The home side’s outside half, Lewis kicked all of his sides points with four first half penalties. All Keys could manage in the opening 40 was a single penalty in reply from Dorian Jones.

It could have been so much better for Keys had they scored when a try looked inevitable after a long period of pressure. But it wasn’t to be and Llanelli’s defence held out for a half time lead of 12-6.

And that proved to be enough of a lead for the home side in what was a low-scoring second half.

Keys were the only scorers after the interval thanks to replacement fly half Dean Hunter’s straight forward penalty with 5 minutes to go but they came up short.
