Ospreys back Jarvis for debut

The Ospreys have backed Aaron Jarvis to make his Wales debut against Argentina in next month’s Dove Men Series.

Exeter-born Jarvis has impressed while deputising for Triple Grand Slam prop Adam Jones at the Swansea-based region.

Both Jones and Craig Mitchell have been ruled out of the autumn internationals.

Paul James and Samson Lee are the other options but Ospreys backs coach Gruff Rees insists Jarvis is the man to fill the front row void.

“Aaron has really taken it on. He’s been given opportunities and seized them, not just through his play in the scrum area, where he has held his own, but around the park as well,” said Rees.

“He’s making a good contribution every week and would get his head down and not let anyone down if given the chance by Wales.

“We have to find a bigger pool of tight-heads. Obviously, Craig Mitchell has done a job in the past but he is injured.

“I believe that, while Samson can benefit from training with Wales, he has to be nurtured and developed at the Scarlets. I feel he needs to do a bit more at pro level for a bit longer, although a lack of depth sometimes means you have to throw people in.

“Aaron has earned that right. With the age he is and the different experiences he has had, the Argentina game is a good one for him. From there, Wales can start to make some informed judgements for the New Zealand and Australia Tests.

“Paul James isn’t really a tight-head. He is a fantastic pro who will do everything he can to make things work.

“But you have to analyse trends in the game, take into account which teams you tend to get most scrums against and who’s reffing.”

Wales hooker, and former captain, Matthew Rees hailed the impact of the young props yesterday.

And Ospreys coach Rees reckons Jarvis has benefitted from working with another former captain to have worn the Welsh number two jersey.

“Aaron has benefited from second season of regular rugby. People get more confidence in what they are doing and learn what it’s about. He has taken on some of ‘Humph’s’ (Ospreys forwards coach Jonathan Humphreys) key message about the set-piece really well.

“He has an aptitude to want to contribute to games around the park. I know Wales will make judgements on training, but they should be looking at Aaron.”
