Wing Alex Webber got the vital home try and Rhys Truelove added the conversion and a penalty to leave the north Walians just short of pulling off their biggest win of the season to date.

While three of the afternoon’s games were postponed due to weather conditions, there was a surprise 17-7 victory for Gilfach Goch at third place Rhydyfelin. Michael Hughes and Adam Powell were the try scorers for the visitors.

Penallta overturned a half-time deficit to beat Mountain Ash 17-11, while the fireworks came early at Bedlinog in Division 2 East, as tries from Ian Smerton, Thomas Hiscox and Leon Rees helped the home side cruise to a 30-0 win over Senghenydd.

Struggling Fleur de Lys narrowly missed out at home to Rhiwbina, going down 22-17 to earn a losing bonus point, while Garndiffaith brushed past Abercynon, 22-9.

In Division 3 East, Rhys Morgan defied the cold and bagged all three tries in Risca’s 22-7 victory against Brynmawr. At the bottom of the table, it was further frustration for Tredegar Ironsides as Abercarn crossed four times to pick up a much needed 22-3 victory.

Ynysddu put on a show away at Machen and fully deserved their 64-10 victory in Division 4 East, scoring nine tries. Leaders Cilfynydd slipped up away at Cwmbran in a tense encounter, losing out 21-20.

It was equally nervy at Trinant in Division 5 East, but Carleon came away with the goods in a tight 22-21 victory. Top of the table Nantyglo dropped their first points of the season as they drew a 17-17 stalemate against Llanhilleth.
