Lobbe ready for Wales test

Argentina captain Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe believes his must team must relish the chance to play at the Millennium Stadium when they take on Wales today.

Lobbe leads out the Pumas and wins his 50th cap as his side look to take their recent good form from the Rugby Championship into their clash with Wales.

The Toulon forward leads a side which features experienced centre Felipe Contepomi and mercurial full-back Juan Martin Hernandez and he believes if his side are to get anything from the game, they must enjoy the Millennium Stadium experience to the full.

“It’s never easy to play at the Millennium Stadium, it’s going to be very tough but the only thing we can control is ourselves,” said the Puma’s leader.

“The opportunity to play here is not to be underestimated. It’s a lovely stadium in which to play.

“Hopefully we can play our rugby and take the initiative and control the game. The conditions will be perfect so we’ll see how we go.”

Argentina’s participation in the recent Rugby Championship has seen them take on New Zealand, Australia and South Africa on a regular basis over the last few months.

Santiago Phelan’s side may have finished bottom of the table but impressed many observers with their performances, drawing with South Africa in Mendoza while only a gritty Australian comeback prevented the Pumas from claiming a famous win on the Gold Coast.

And Lobbe believes the experience of playing the southern hemisphere sides will be of huge benefit ahead of their clash with Wales.

“I think it’s been a great experience. To play these games against such high quality opposition has been very good for us,” he added.

“There’s a few key players missing but we are a big squad. Everyone has been working hard and I’m fully confident the 22 boys will give everything tomorrow.

“Wales are a really good team. They are trying to play a quick style of rugby, more intense and physical so it’s going to be very, very intense.”

No. 8 Lobbe is one of the best back-row forwards in world rugby but believes his fellow forwards face a tough ask against Wales. Wales interim coach Rob Howley may be without the likes of Dan Lydiate and Ryan Jones but Lobbe is ready for a tough forward battle.

“The Wales back-row is always the same, always very physical,” said Lobbe, who picked out Lydiate’s replacement Josh Turnbull as a threat.

“In the games we have watched of Turnbull we have seen he’s very physical so it’s going to be a very tough challenge,” he added.

“Wales are trying to play as quick a game as possible, similar to Australia and New Zealand so it’s going to be very, very hard.”
