The Grand Slam champions have triumphed in just one match under Howley’s guidance – a 30-21 victory over the Barbarians in June – but the British & Irish Lions hooker reckons Wales can roar against Los Pumas.
“We went so close out in Australia in the summer – we lost those games ourselves,” said Rees. “Rob did a great job down there, stepping in while Warren (Gatland) was away, so it would be great to have a result for him.
“He was experienced as a player and he has learned as a coach under Warren. He helps make it a professional environment and was one of the best No. 9s in world rugby. When you have someone like that coaching you, you can only look up and appreciate their worth.”
Rees will pack down with Gethin Jenkins and England-born debutant Aaron Jarvis in the Wales front-row. They face a formidable Pumas pack but Rees is ready for a full-blooded battle.
“If you give Argentina an inch they’ll take it and it will be a tough day at the office,” he said. “It’s up to us to focus on what we are going to bring to the game and make sure we deliver.
“It’s our opening game of the series and it’s important we get off to a win. Whether it’s by one point or by five or whatever, we’ll take it.”
“Argentina have a pack of forwards who are renowned for being physical and tough up front. We know it won’t be an easy game, but it’s important we lay the foundations for our backline.
“You have to give Argentina credit for the way they’ve played in the Rugby Championship. It’s their first year and they’ll only get better. We know it will be a tough game, but we’ll be up for the challenge.”
