Women’s regional festival review

The Women’s Regional Festival took place at Llandovery last Sunday with players given the chance to impress in front of both regional and national coaches.

All four regional teams bought extended squads of more than 30 players giving coaches an opportunity to see the players in a final trial match situation before cutting their squads ahead of the first game next week.

With squad development the aim of the day, the regional festival was just as much about talent identification as actual match success. However it was the Blues who ended the day on top, winning all three of their games.

Over 100 girls took part in competitive, high intensity fixtures that have definitely set the standard for the regional competition.

“Sunday was a brilliant advertisement for the women’s game with a number of impressive players on show,” said Sophie Bennett, WRU Women’s Performance Manager.

“All three games were closely thought and I’d like to say thank you to Llandovery for hosting the tournament.

“The national squad coaches were really pleased with what they saw and quite a few girls impressed on the day.

“The key is now for these girls to keep the work going throughout the next three games.

“Places in the final national squad ahead of the Six Nations are still up for grabs.”
