Blues off to winning start

The first round of regional fixtures took place for the women’s sides last Sunday with some entertaining rugby on show.

Both games were moved to Llandarcy after the bad weather caused the original venue, Maesteg RFC, to be unplayable.

The move didn’t seem to hinder the players though as the Blues and the Ospreys ran out victorious to get their campaigns off to a winning start.

In the first game, the Blues ran in four tries as they saw off the Dragons 23-17.

Gemma Hallett, Becky Newton, Laura Prosser and replacement Nia Davies all went over as the Blues served notice of their intentions for the rest of the season. Scrum half Prosser added a penalty as her side eventually ran out narrow winners.

They did not have it all their own way though as they were pushed all the way by a committed and determined Dragons side. Wingers Leila John and Rhiannon Parker had earlier put the Dragons into an early 15-3 lead as they dominated the early exchanges.

But they went off the boil in the second half and the Blues roared back to take the victory.

In the other game to take place, the Ospreys got the better of the Scarlets in a narrow game, eventually prevailing 7-5.

With both sides desperate for a win in their first game of the season, the first half was very tight with the game scoreless at the interval. Props Bethan Howell and Cennen Eifion crossed for the Ospreys and Scarlets respectively.

But Jess Richards’ conversion of Howell’s try won the game for the Ospreys.
