New training pitch for Alltwen

The building of Alltwen RFC’s new training pitch is beginning to take shape thanks to the WRU’s Facilities Foundation Grant.

Alltwen were one of more than 20 clubs who received funding from the WRU which allowed them to apply for financial assistance to improve their facilities.

A total of £175,000 was awarded to clubs across Wales in the first round of funding as part of a £500,000 fund from the WRU announced in the summer.

Clubs who have received funding have used the money to benefit their community in a number of different ways but Alltwen have used theirs to build a new community training pitch.

The new training pitch at the club will be 60 metres by 40 metres and has been built on what was previously unused land.

“The land had not been utilised for a long time so we wanted to do something with it to benefit the club,” said Club Secretary David Morgan.

“Hopefully it will help to develop our junior section as we’ve looked at resurrecting this area for a long time.

“It’s 99 per cent finished now after the project was given the OK back in September. We’re just waiting for the grass to grow now.”

The new facility at Alltwen, which has also been supported by grants from Sport Wales and the Millennium  Charitable Trust Fund amongst others, will be top of the range and Mr Morgan hopes it will attract new and younger players to the club.

“The fact that we have floodlight columns too means that for a small club, the facilities will be second to none,” he added.

“It’s important to attract new players to the club at all times and the first class facilities we will have will hopefully do that.”
