Evans tipped for call-up

Lewis Evans has been tipped for a Six Nations call-up after shining in Newport Gwent Dragons’ festive defeats.

The Men of Gwent lost to Cardiff Blues on Boxing Day and came up short once against the Ospreys on New Year’s Eve.

But Lewis was immensely impressive in the defeats and Dragons head coach Darren Edwards reckons his form warrants an international call-up.

“Players put their markers down in derby and games and in Europe and Lewis showed his class over Christmas,” said Edwards.

“He was superb in the collisions against the Blues and then in the contact area against the Ospreys, which is one of their real strengths.

“Lewis was excellent at the breakdown, carried the ball well and showed that not only is he a big man but he has skills as well.

“I think there is no doubt that he has the potential to play international rugby and we believe that he can push himself into the frame.”

Evans, was called into the Wales squad in the autumn of 2011, has filled the void left by Danny Lydiate’s injury on the Dragons’ blindside flank.

But Wales boast a wealth of riches in the back-row with Lydiate, Toby Faletau and Sam Warburton the first choice combination.

Ryan Jones, Justin Tipuric, Aaron Shingler, Rob McCusker and Josh Turnbull are also likely to be in contention.
