Held at the University of Glamorgan’s Sport Park, the competition followed on from the successful eight week 15 a side tournament which took place in the autumn term. Three Universities competed in the competition – Swansea, Cardiff Metropolitan and Glamorgan.
Dr. Tudor Williams, Director of Sport at the University of Glamorgan, said: “This was an excellent day. Both the 15 a side league before Christmas and this sevens festival have been excellent in engaging many more students in playing regular competitive rugby at universities.
“I would like to thank the WRU for their tremendous support in encouraging this programme and I hope that this can be repeated next year as this really has been a success.”
The competition, like the 15 a side competition before Christmas, was organised by the University of Glamorgan’s ‘ACE’ students. ACE is an Active Community Enterprise specialising in sustainable inclusive community sport in South Wales.
Each team played six matches plus a cup and plate final for the top four in the league.
Over 70 first years participated in the four hour competition in very cold weather with Dr. Williams adding: “My thanks must go to the referees who supported the programme, the ACE students and of course all the first years that participated.”
The Plate final saw Cardiff Met see off Glamorgan 24-17 while it was a similar result in the Cup where Cardiff Met’s other side were convincing 38-0 winners over Swansea.
