This money forms the second part of a £500,000 fund from the WRU announced in the summer which allows clubs to apply for financial assistance to improve their facilities and is in addition to the monies announced as part of the WRU Club Funding Index last month.
A further 30 clubs have benefitted from round two of the funding, allowing them to improve their facilities in a number of different ways.
Projects include refurbishment of club houses and changing rooms, the purchase of grounds maintenance equipment, posts and storage containers, the development of training areas, pitch improvements, the development of a 3G pitch and the installation of new floodlights.
Tenby are one of a number of clubs who plan to use their grant on improvements to their playing surface.
“Our main ground is outstanding but our Second XV pitch is undulating and we have got to the stage where we can’t play our second team games there,” said Club Secretary Martyn Williams.
“The junior sections play on there but we need to level it out so we are using the WRU grant to do that.”
With a vibrant junior rugby section from Under 7s upwards, the new playing surface is vital in bringing through the next generation of players in the sea-side town.
“It will guarantee the survival of our youth and junior teams as well as our seconds,” Williams added.
“We’ve renovated the changing rooms ourselves but it’s vital we do the pitch now as without that there is obviously no game. We are working extremely hard to make sure rugby survives in Tenby and we are very grateful to the WRU for their support.”
Dolgellau have used their grant for a similar purpose as they look to improve their pitch.
“We have been told our training pitch has poor quality soil so we are implementing a drainage scheme to maximise its use,” said club secretary Selwyn Goldsworthy.
“Our club plays a vital role in the development of rugby in north Wales so it’s vital our facilities are up to scratch. We are aiming to begin the work at the end of April.”
Community rugby is one of the priorities of the WRU and its success is vital to the sustainability of the game throughout Wales.
