Thomas’ side trailed 17-8 at half time as Morgannwg’s powerful backs caused the home side all sorts of trouble.
But second half scores from Sion Hughes, Owen Howe and Olly Smyth, adding to his earlier effort, secured a dramatic win. The 27-24 victory means Llandovery are now guaranteed second place in the WRU Colleges league and will at worst, have to play off for a place in the Millennium Stadium final.
“It was an absolute cracker wasn’t it?” said Thomas.
“It was a huge game, a wonderful game and after Saturday, today complimented it well.
“The two sides gave it everything and they made us work hard but we won’t be taking anything for granted.”
In a tremendously fast start, Morgannwg’s Jack Huntley could have grabbed a hat-trick inside five minutes as he went close on three separate occasions.
The first saw the wing adjudged to have a foot in touch as the visitors dominated the early exchanges. The Llandovery defence held firm though and an opening score failed to arrive.
And when centre Jedd Evans led a Llandovery breakaway, Morgannwg were penalised for offside and Owen Howe gave the home side a 3-0 lead.
Morgannwg’s danger had been clear from the first whistle and they hit back immediately with a score from full back Tom Macaloon. The move began inside their own half with Macaloon the beneficiary. Jared Evans missed the conversion but his side led 5-3.
It was end to end stuff, befitting of a clash between two sides at the top of the table. And both teams then added a try apiece in double quick time – Smyth finishing in the corner for Llandovery before Jack James went over for Morgannwg following sustained forward pressure.
Evans converted James’ score and with half an hour gone, Morgannwg led 8-12.
That was not the end of the scoring though and with Morgannwg on top, hooker Liam Belcher took further advantage to extend his team’s half time advantage. Evans struck a post with the conversion but his team had a comfortable interval lead.
If the first half had seen plenty of thrills and spills, it was nothing compared to the second. Howe had a chance to get Llandovery back into it just seconds after the restart but saw his long range penalty drift wide.
Hughes then crossed to start the comeback before Evans responded with what was the try of the day. The Morgannwg fly half extended his side lead with a lovely show and go which out foxed the Llandovery defence. He added the simple conversion and with a 24-13 lead, hopes for a vital away win would have been high.
The home side had something to say about it though and in a purple patch of 10 minutes, two quick tries left Thomas jumping for joy on the sidelines.
First Lloyd Rogers drew the last defender to allow Howe to score in the corner before another length of the field move saw Smyth add his second.
Centre Howe added the extras to both scores and although he missed a late penalty, the victory was already in the bag.
