The 23-16 win means Dale McIntosh’s side are now a remarkable 20 points clear at the top of the Principality Premiership having played a game more than second placed Bedwas.
The visitors took the early initiative driving hard into the home 22 and maintaining pressure, the ball eventually spun out wide for winger Owen Williams to cross for a try. Simon Humberstone converted for a 7-0 lead after just five minutes.
Poaching opposition line out ball, Pontypridd kept up their attacking momentum with outside half Humberstone extending the lead with a penalty. The visitors were applying concerted pressure, forcing the Llanelli defence into committing errors with the game played almost exclusively in the home half.
Working off a solid set piece platform, Pontypridd once more pressed to the line, scrum half Carl Thomas going close to scoring in the corner. And after dominating for the first half hour, Ponty generated another attack spearheaded by centre Dafydd Lockyer. The ball was moved wide to wing Williams who off loaded in the tackle for Tom Pascoe to cross for a try. Humberstone converted from a wide angle.
A shell shocked Llanelli finally composed themselves to advance into opposition territory and to finish the first half strongly. Taking attacking line out ball, home hooker Craig Hawkins charged over for a close range try with 34 minutes gone. Llanelli continued to apply pressure, Diggy Bird kicking three points for the home side but the away team maintained an 8-17 half time lead.
The second half got underway in deteriorating conditions but Pontypridd were dealt a blow when flanker Tom Hetherington was dispatched to the sin bin.
Llanelli took advantage with a penalty kicked by centre Dion Jones and in a tense, sometimes attritional game, Llanelli No. 8 Stuart Leach was the next to be yellow carded.
The visitors were just edging the contest territorially though and forged further ahead as replacement outside half Dai Flanagan hoisted over two late penalties in succession.
Going into injury time, Llanelli finished the game strongly applying concerted pressure to the visitors twenty-two. Holding a last ditch defensive line, Ponty had second row Craig Locke sent to the sin bin and conceded a late pushover try claimed by Llanelli scrum half Ryan Jones.
The consolation score gained the home team a losing bonus point but it was the visitors who went home happiest.
