With the rain pouring down and a strong wind blowing, both sides fought out an attritional game with substance over style the order of the day.
The Blue and Blacks came under some pressure in the early part of the game, Llandovery happy to use their forwards to rumble up the field. And when the first try came, it was their pack who were credited for the score.
From a line out, the ball was smuggled to the back and with the Cardiff defence split, the referee ran under the posts to award a penalty try. James Garland added the conversion to put the home side into a 7-0 lead.
Cardiff were having to defend strongly and several charges at the line were repelled with Richard Smith, Ellis Jenkins and Rory Watt-Jones all impressing in defence.
It wasn’t all one way traffic though, Cory Allen and Luke Ford getting their fair share of go forward ball in the centre with the experienced Ceiron Thomas using his boot to great effect. Thomas then put Cardiff on the board before half time, landing a penalty into the wind for a 7-3 half time score line.
The second half saw Cardiff play with the breeze but it wasn’t long before Llandovery took control. Adam Warren raced under the posts from 25 metres out with Garland adding the extras to double the home team’s score.
Cardiff fought back again and after a maul was stopped a few inches short, the ball was recycled for replacement Nick White to crash over.
Thomas added the conversion but that was to be the last score as Cardiff failed with late pressure to only come away with a bonus point.
