The Wales full back was one of the stand-out performers as Warren Gatland’s Lions returned home from Australia with a 2-1 series win.

Halfpenny’s performances saw him return with a personal haul of 114 points with his near perfect kicking, faultless defence and clever attacking play earning him rave reviews.

Now, after a couple of months rest, Halfpenny is set to return for the Blues in their third RaboDirect PRO12 game of the season.

Looking ahead to the clash with Zebre, Director of Rugby Phil Davies confirmed: “Leigh will be starting this week which is great.

“We’ve made a couple of changes to selection based on continuity, giving people opportunities to play and developing strength in the squad.”

Asked what Halfpenny brings to his side, Davies believes the Gorseinon product is up there with the best around.

He added: “Leigh is just Leigh. He’s set such high standards since I’ve been here in his training and preparation.

“His performances are speaking for themselves. With Israel Dagg, he’s the best in the world. He won’t thank me for saying that as he’s so down to earth and an exceptional person.

“We’re just pleased to have him here and back playing after his break. It always gives you confidence if you have people like him in the team.”

Halfpenny looks set to return alongside fellow Lion Alex Cuthbert who started last week’s win over Connacht. Rhys Patchell booted 21 points in that victory but will lose the kicking duties with Halfpenny returning to the side.

Elsewhere, Macauley Cook gets a chance on the blindside with Andries Pretorius at No. 8. Sam Warburton and Gethin Jenkins, who both suffered injuries on tour with the Lions, look set to feature in the next couple of weeks.

“Nothing has changed other than I suppose Leigh is a bit more experienced and is playing at an exceptionally high level,” said Davies.

“There’s a high standard to everything he does – he’s come back into a team that’s growing and developing each week.”
