They were beaten 23-22 by Heol y Cyw thanks to a last minute drop goal from Harley Thompson that allowed the visitors to steal the spoils after an epic battle. Mike Huckridge chipped in with five penalties and scrum half Matt Pound grabbed a vital try.
The home side had 17 points from the boot of Gary Wilkes to keep them in contention and they also earned a penalty try. It was Penallta’s first league defeat of the season and the blow was eased by the fact second placed Rumney also lost their unbeaten tag.
In a classic Cardiff derby, in which both sides scored four tries, Glamorgan Wanderers finally picked up their first win of the campaign as they triumphed 35-32 in a real cliff hanger. Owen Marshall crossed twice for the visitors, while Joe Griffin and Ray Bishop also scored tries.
There were 15 points from the boot of Sean Cochlin to add into the mix and give the Wanderers, relegated from the Championship last season, some confidence ahead of this weekend’s home clash with Heol y Cyw.
Rumney will look to pick up the pieces at home against Rhydyfelin, who also notched their first win of the season last weekend with an impressive 29-17 win over Ystrad Rhondda.
Merthyr’s transformation under new coach Lee Jarvis from basement side to table-toppers continued as they ran in another six tries in a 36-5 home win over Ynysybwl. That came on top of the nine tries they had run in the previous weekend against Treorchy.
The Ironmen head to Bedlinog this weekend and will be hoping win Owain Morgan can maintain his try scoring form after running in a brace against Ynysybwl. Outstanding lock Iwan Williams, full back Josh Flye and new back row man Chris Davies also crossed the visitors’ line and there was also a penalty try.
Newly promoted Nelson got their first win under their belt with a 26-13 home win over Treorchy and will head to Ynysybwl with greater confidence this weekend. Ross Bevan, Ben Cullen and Kirk Clabby scored the home tries.
Gilfach Goch’s 15-8 home win over Bedlinog came courtesy of a Michael Hughes touchdown and a penalty try. They travel to Ystrad Rhondda this weekend.
Penallta lose proud home record
Penallta will be hoping to bounce back from their first home defeat in almost two years when they head to Treorchy in Swalec Division One East this weekend.
