Ponty target London Welsh clash

Pontypridd welcome London Welsh to Sardis Road on Saturday with Dale McIntosh going head-to-head with Justin Burnell.

The two sides meet in the pool stages of the British & Irish Cup with Pontypridd in confident mood after a comprehensive 53-13 win over Edinburgh Academicals. London Welsh on the other hand, who were relegated from the Aviva Premiership last year, suffered a narrow defeat to London Scottish.

But with Welsh head coach Burnell returning to former club Pontypridd, there is plenty of added spice to what should be a thoroughly entertaining fixture.

“It will be a massive game. My old mate Justin Burnell is there and a couple of Welsh boys and it’s going to be a great day,” said McIntosh.

“We’ll have to play our A game and more to beat them. They’re flying in the league and I’m sure Justin won’t come down empty handed as he knows what sort of side we are at home.”

Undefeated so far this season, Pontypridd got their British & Irish Cup campaign off to a solid start in the Scottish capital. Matthew Nuthall got things started with centre Gavin Dacey making his 200th Pontypridd appearance.

Looking back on the win over Edinburgh, McIntosh said: “I’m chuffed for the players and what they achieved. It was a great performance and we’ve showed right from the off that we intend to be in this competition to make an impact.”

Skipper Chris Dicomidis added: “It was a good result and a good start for us in the competition with a bonus point win. We now need to build up momentum and we have a massive game coming up at home to London Welsh.

“The support in Edinburgh today phenomenal and we will need the same backing back at the House of Pain next Saturday.”

Winger Nuthall said: “Coming down from the Premiership last year, London Welsh are going to be the main team in the group. The British & Irish Cup is the big one for us. We did the double last year and got close in this competition but not quite close enough.”
