Llanelli legend dies

The death has occurred of Ray Williams, the former Llanelli and Wales threequarter.

Williams was the first-ever life member of Llanelli RFC having played 450 games and scored 213 tries, playing his last game for the club on April 27, 1961.

He appeared three times for Wales, scoring a try on his debut against Scotland at Swansea in 1954 when he was aged 26. He went on to play on the wing against France in 1957 and Australia in 1958,being on the winning side in all three appearances.

Born in Felinfoel on November 13, 1927, he attended Llanelli Grammar School and appearing for the National Boys Clubs of Wales, then studying at St Luke’s College in Exter, playing for Devon County before going to Cardiff College of Education and appearing for Feinfoel and Llanelli, making his debut for the Scarlets on April 19, 1946 with three tries against Penarth.

A schoolmaster, who taught rugby at Gwendraeth Grammar School, he played 26 years for Llanelli, who he skippered in 1955-56. He did National Service with the South Wales Borderers and was a member of the Llanelli Male Voice Choir.

A tall, lean, extremely fit player, he played for Llanelli against South Africa (1951 and 1960), New Zealand (1953) and Australia (1957) and at the time of his death was the 11th-oldest-surviving Wales player.

He died in Llanelli on Sunday, January 5, 2014, aged 86. He was the 601st player to win a Wales cap.
