The Premiership side were given a thorough examination by Whitland who showed they will be a tough nut to crack next season after they gained promotion from Division 1.
Both teams threw everything at each other where the scrums were evenly matched and both defences tackled heroically.
The first period of the match was dominated by Whitland who attacked through forwards and backs, hitting up close and going wide, twice getting bundled into touch on the try line, but they could not break through the Seven Sisters defence.
After a good clearance down field by the home team the Borderettes found themselves in their 22 for the first time in the half. A series of forward drives saw the Seven Sisters pack pull in the Whitland defence and fly half Rachel Rees spotted a mismatch in midfield, threw the dummy and cantered in for a well taken try. She also added the conversion.
For the final 10 minutes of the first half the Borderettes again attacked and attacked in the Seven 22 but resolute defence kept them out.
The second half was basically a mirror image of the first. Both teams threw everything into attack when they had the ball and when they didn’t they put in massive hits in defence. With neither defence being broken the second half remained scoreless but far from boring to watch.
Elsewhere, Llandaff North, Pontyclun Falcons and Caernarfon all gained decisive victories in Pool A against Pencoed, Gwernyfed and Blaenau Gwent respectively.
Last year’s winner Neath Athletic had a bye.
In Pool B, Penallta moved straight to the top spot after a comfortable 45-0 win over Seaview while Croesyceiliog came away from Division 2 winners Barry with a losing bonus point after a 5-0 defeat. Gorseinon returned from Maesteg Celtic after a 12-5 defeat.
Disivsion 3 winners Kidwelly’s game against Tylorstown was postponed.
Pool C begins this week with fixtures between Haverfordwest v Lampeter, Abergavenny v Penybanc and Nantyfyllon v Bargoed.
