He has represented District D on the main board since 2005 and is a WRU citing commissioner at Test match level. Morgan, 77, cites personal and family reasons for his decision to step down at the end of his current term.

He said: “It has been a privilege and a pleasure to be able to contribute in my own way to the game that has given me so much pleasure and which has led me to so many friendships I will continue to cherish.

“My decision not to seek re-election has been difficult because the work of the board remains important to me and I wish my successor luck in what I know will be a fascinating, exciting and worthwhile experience.”

He informed the WRU President, Chairman and Group Chief Executive of his decision last Saturday and has since told his district clubs and colleagues on the main board.

Morgan is a retired lecturer in Agriculture and Head of Department at Glamorgan College of Agriculture.

He played rugby for Cwmgwrach, University of Wales Aberystwyth, Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire, Winchester, Hampshire, Glynneath and Bridgend Sports. He has been Chairman of District D and was secretary of Bridgend Sports RFC for 30 years.

The Chairman of the WRU, David Pickering, said: “Aurwel Morgan is a knowledgeable rugby man who has been and remains a great servant of our game.

“His contribution to the governance of Welsh rugby has been exceptional and I know the great pride he takes from being a member of our board since 2005 has made his decision to step down extremely difficult.

“Everyone in Welsh rugby and the countless friends he has made around the world wish him well for the future and in his continued association with the game.”
