Wednesday League round-up

Pembrokeshire Schools head coach Jonny Llewhellin said a draw was a fair result after he saw his side share the spoils with Cowbridge Comprehensive in the WRU Wednesday Under 18 League.

The teams ended the 70 minutes at Tenby RFC level at 29-29 with nine tries scored in an end-to-end encounter.

Pembrokeshire went into half time with a narrow advantage but were indebted to two late tries from flanker Ifan Phillips to secure the draw.

“It was an entertaining game but we are really pleased for the boys,” said Llewhellin.

“They have worked hard over the Christmas period and they got their just rewards today. We said to the boys at half time we were in the ascendency but we went to sleep in the second half and let Cowbridge back into it.

“But we dug deep and a draw was a fair result in the end. Hopefully the confidence in the squad will grow from this game and that’s what the boys need. It’s a good start to the New Year.”

In addition to Phillips’ brace, Ryan Joseph, Luke Conbeer and scrum half Lewys Gibby were all on the score sheet but the west Wales outfit had to settle for a draw.

In the other Wednesday League games taking place this week, Coleg Sir Gar’s mouth-watering clash with Coleg Y Cymoedd was postponed due to the wet weather. Cymoedd were winners in the return fixture at Cardiff Arms Park earlier this season but Sir Gar will have to wait to see if they can enact revenge.

At Llandarcy, Neath Port Talbot College outscored Coleg Gwent seven tries to three in a high-scoring encounter. The home side eventually ran out 41-22 winners with centre Joe Thomas scoring two of his side’s tries.

The home of the Ospreys also saw a clash between Bridgend College and Coleg Llandrillo on Wednesday morning with Bridgend emerging as narrow 14-12 winners. Both sides scored two tries apiece but two conversions from Bridgend’s Rhodri Davies proved crucial to the outcome.

There were also plenty of tries in Swansea, as Llandovery College travelled back north following a 23-46 victory over Gower College. Things were tight between the two sides for the first quarter but a brace of tries either side of the break from Llandovery outside centre Ben Phillips guided Iestyn Thomas’ side home.
