Game time great for young Sam

Ospreys fly half Sam Davies says game time is the key to his fine form this season.

The 20-year-old has played 10 times this term, starting five times as full back and establishing himself as second-choice No10 behind Wales international Dan Biggar with a string of superb showings for the region.

Davies had played just four times across the past two campaigns but has come into his own and ousted Matthew Morgan as Biggar’s back up in the Heineken Cup and RaboDirect PRO12 and given Richard Fussell a run for his money in the No15 shirt.

“You ask any rugby player, no matter how old they are, and they’ll tell you that they just want game time,” said Davies.

“It’s been great for my development. It doesn’t really matter where it comes from, I’ve been playing 15, and I’ve enjoyed it.

“It’s been great to get on the field for the derbies, to experience the atmosphere and the big crowds. That’s something new for me, that I’m not used to, and to have that under my belt helps to build my confidence up for bigger challenges.”

Davies shone in his last outing for the Ospreys, scoring 17 points in a thrilling 37-36 success against Sale Sharks in the LV= Cup on Friday night.

The Wales U20 star slotted a touchline conversion with the last play of the game to cap a remarkable comeback in Bridgend as the Ospreys ended their Anglo-Welsh campaign on a major high.

“It was great to come back and get a win in the end, especially in the fashion we did it. We were pressing them for most of the second half and, luckily enough, we got there just in time,” Davies told the Ospreys website after they overturned separate 15 and 16-point deficits at the Brewery Field.

“The fight and commitment the boys showed in the second half is what being an Osprey is all about and it was great to be a part of.

“We were very poor in the first 40, our set piece didn’t function which led to a lot of other things not going as we wanted and we found ourselves on the back foot too often, resulting in Sale building a lead. It was just a case of coming out for the second half with our heads held high and getting stuck into them.

“We always believed that we could clinch the victory if we got the performance right, and fair play to the boys for sticking at it. It was a great experience to be a part of and it puts us in good stead now for some big games coming up over the next few weeks.”
