Gareth Williams’ side were just edged out of the Cup competition yesterday due to an inferior points difference to Canada but they put that disappointment behind them to beat Spain 24-19 in the Bowl quarter-finals before sweeping aside hosts Japan by the same score in the semi-final.
Scotland held a 7-0 lead at the break in the final and when James Johnstone raced over for his second converted try Wales were 14-0 behind but with the introduction of super sub Evans the match turned.
He scored his first try less than a minute after coming on and when Luke Morgan chipped in with a well crafted try, Wales had leveled the scores thanks to Ross Jones’ boot.
Wales skippeer James Davies then raced over before Mark Robertson replied to leave the match on a knife-edge but Evans’ second touchdown, again converted by Jones, a minute from time, gave Wales the victory.
Wales now move to next weekend’s Hong Kong Sevens tournament having moved up one place in the overall World Series rankings to 10th place with 45 points.
