Edwards makes changes for Bournemouth

Wales Women’s head coach Rhys Edwards is buoyed by last weekend’s success in Amsterdam as his side prepare for this weekend’s Bournemouth 7s Festival.

Edwards has been heading up the Sevens programme and has seen a rapid improvement in his side’s fortunes in the past couple of years.

Two years ago when Wales first sent a side to compete in the Amsterdam Sevens his side finished a disappointing 13th but last week Wales went all the way to the final before bowing out against the Australian development side, Tribe.

“That shows how far we have come in a relatively short time,” he said. “Last week we had a couple of real tough games but the girls came through it. Their fitness levels were good as were their skills and even though we lost in the final against a very strong Australian side, we finished well so we’re looking to do well this weekend in Bournemouth which is a well-established tournament.

“We’ve made a couple of changes to the side this weekend with Ffion Bowen and Carys Phillips coming in to the squad. It’s a case of rotating the squad and giving more players an opportunity to compete at this level.

“There will is also a Welsh influence into other teams in the Women’s section with Rebecca de Filippo and Delyth Davies in Tribe’s squad while Dyddgu Hywel, Amy Day and Jasmine Joyce feature for Wooden Spoons.”

Chantelle Miller impressed in her debut last weekend and Edwards is looking forward to seeing her play again this weekend.

“She is new to our system and plays for British Army but she is definitely now on our radar. Everything is being geared for the FIRA Sevens which are being staged in Moscow and Brive next month where we are targeting a top 10 finish so it’s imperative that all our players put their hands up to be in with a chance of making those tournaments.”
