Despite the hold-up at Cwmavon, Cwmgors had a great season, winning all but two of the league games that they’ve played.
Cwmgors’s league victory has been aided by the impressive boot of fly-half Steff Rees – the club’s top points scorer – who broke a club record this season by scoring 338 points.
Rees was also quick on his feet in crossing the gain line as he was also crowned the club’s top try scorer, alongside Lloyd Watson with 11 tries each.
Rees said the Cwmgors players were delighted with their second championship success in successive seasons, having taking the Division 5 title last year.
He said: “It means everything. It’s a close knit team. We’ve seen the boys develop through youth team rugby under the guidance of ‘Stan’ (coach Chris Jones) and Barry (Morgan). All we want is to go up the leagues and play at a higher level of rugby.
“We felt how good last year was after winning the league and our aim this year was to go up again. Everyone plays rugby to win and that was our aim. “We worked hard all season and the result came.
“As for next year, I’m not too sure. There are a couple of boys finishing. There might be a change in the coaching staff. We are going up to a tougher league next year and we have to take each game as it comes. We can’t aim too high. But, if we stick together as a team, we might be there again next season”
Cwmgors Club Captain Rob Clive, who plays in the back row said: “This means everything to us. It’s a great reward for us. We’ve been building for the last two or three years. We are still a young squad. Stan (coach Chris Jones), Barry (Morgan) and Richard Greig have worked hard with us. It’s our second championship on the bounce, so it’s been a good season. We are not team of individuals. We have gelled together and it’s a real team effort.
“It’s a harder test next year tougher games, tougher opposition but I think we will be all right as long as we keep developing and keep building this team. I think we will take anybody on, especially at home.”
Cwmgors assistant coach Barry Morgan, who is retiring from the coaching staff, said: “The boys have pushed on from last season. Winning Division 5 and then winning Division 4 is a massive achievement for us. The boys have a very good attitude and work hard as a team.
“I’m taking a step back. I won’t be involved in the coaching next year. But it’s a good way to go out and I’m really chuffed and happy for the boys. Two championships in two years isn’t a bad way to go out.
WRU Board Member Brian Fowler added: “Cwmgors have run an active Junior Section for many years and most of their current 1st XV have come through the junior ranks. It is testimony to the hard work carried out by the coaches of the teams in the junior section that after a few lean years that the Club has now turned the corner. Following on from winning promotion from 5 South West last season as Champions they have gained a second promotion, this time from 4 South West, and again as Champions. My congratulations go to Cwmgors.”
