The club have in place one of the most talented and progressive young coaching teams in Welsh rugby, with the added relevance that all of its members are former Pontypridd players.
Paul John will head up the team as senior coach, sharing the duties with his full time role as backs coach with Cardiff Blues.
Carrying out the main ‘hands on’ work with the Ponty squad will be Geraint Lewis as forwards coach and Gareth Wyatt as backs coach. Stepping in to mentor the development of the front five forwards as ‘scrum engineer’ will be the experienced and charismatic Garin Jenkins.
Darren Bool will continue as conditioning coach, having earned plaudits for bringing the fitness levels of the Ponty squad up to a level that can compete with fully professional English and Irish teams.
Co-ordinating the coaching structure will be team manager Richard Langmead, who can objectively appreciate the quality of coaches now working with the club.
“We had a good chemistry developing amongst the coaches last season” said Langmead, “that despite the disruption of changes being made to the structure during the course of the campaign. With the team now working together through pre-season, hopefully things will get even better.
“We are delighted that Paul John is continuing with his involvement, he is someone that the other coaches can look up to and is Ponty through and through. It is important however to emphasise that Geraint Lewis and Gareth Wyatt have the ability and the incentive to bring in their own ideas.
“There has been a big improvement in our set piece play since Garin Jenkins came on board, and he and Geraint have already built up a good working relationship.
“Booly has achieved great things with the fitness of the squad, which of course lays the foundations for the work that our other coaches do.
“All in all we have a top class coaching team in place at Pontypridd, one that will hopefully guide the squad to further success.”
